The talk by Jonathan Zittrain show us that internet (only) works on random acts of kindness.
I’ve been active on the net from 2000 and that was one of the things that struck me almost immediately. I first had the impression that because the medium was still young it had to do with the front-runners and that it will die out when the masses will come. They are here now and there are loads of examples telling that my fear will not become true.
When internet stays by the people and for the people, we as a people will do what morally is right. And internet will become what we all dream it can be. If not, “it’s just 45 minutes away from disaster” as Jonathan puts it speaking about Wikipedia.
The examples that Jonathan Zittrain shows us are just a few but they speak out very lively. Enjoy

This is great. A new theory as where we evolutionary came from. Now I know why I’m so drawn to water. It would be a great thing to experience. A total shift from one theory to another. Science can’t really cope with that idea yet.

“By 2010 computers will disappear. The will be so small the will be embedded in our clothing. Images will go directly to our brain creating full emergence in virtual reality…. If you go to 2029 we will have 2-25th power beter price performance capacity…. it will be millions of times more powerfull then it is today…. a $1000 of computer will be far more powerful than the human brain in term of raw capacity… we are going to merge with these technologies… it will be a great expansion of our intelligence… growth is exponential not linear.”
Progress is inevitable. So these predictions by Ray Kurzweil just blow my mind because if you only look at the growth curve, he must be right.

I crave for TED speeches and I have to constrain myself not to repost them all (what’s the use of that!). But the passion of Hans for stats is unresistable and to make it even worse he shows us a web based tool that gives easy and accessible data in a few clicks. The Trendalyzer software is now acquired by google. Could be a good thing, we’ll see.

After seeing the aging talk by Aubrey de Grey this just convinces me we are on our way to find less barbaric ways of repairing ourselfs. Now let stop being barbaric all together.

Although I despise and can’t understand he concept of war it’s been here through history, the present and will be here in the future. To see this was quite shocking.
Thomas Barnett has a down to earth logic approach from within the current system of war to guarantee(?) peace and a new beginning.
The powers that be should listen and act upon it. This talk was in 2005 and I guess he was already preacing way before that. We are now 2007. Nothing is resonating that his proposed change is eminent. Maybe the upcoming president of the USA will be able to make it happen.
At hate what I just written down. War = humanity failing. Let’s focus on the positive again and move on.

He really touched me with his sincerity he displaying for more than 20 years now.

James Nachtwey talks about his decades as a photojournalist. A slideshow of his photos, beginning in 1981 in Northern Ireland, reveals two parallel themes in his work. First, as he says: “The frontlines of contemporary wars are right where people live.” Street violence, famine, disease: he has photographed all these modern WMDs. Second, when a photo catches the world’s attention, it can truly drive action and change.

Hush, little baby, don’t say a word
Wait for the man with the mocking bird

I’ve seen three of his brainwaves on TED and loved them but this one is my favorite. I like the way he accelerates and slows down again in a continues stream / flow of words. The power of language. It’s not only the meaning of the story and the sentence within, the words itself are explosions of meaning, personalized associations and public symbolism. He uses that power.

I’m very keen on to that kind of oral expression. Dutch (society critical) comedy has a great culture doing just that. Our language invites you to.
(Rives, in my humble opinion, is bordering on comedy)
